How expansive can one’s imagination be? This was the guiding principle behind this “nonsense” stop-motion animation. The project was part of a course that explores creativity in art and design, which encouraged us to break boundaries and defy conventions. After selecting 20 random words from “The Wizard of Oz”, I creatively grouped the words into short seemingly nonsensical sentences. These sentences then helped shape the visual development and storyboard.
Removing the constraints of a conventional narrative allows me to focus on the materials, movement, and space within the animation. Therefore, the process of creating this animation was a profound learning experience, providing insights into creative practices in the art industry and pushing the limits of my capabilities.
I. 20 Words
II. Visual Development
III. Storyboard
The final outcome deviated quite significantly from the initial storyboard, mainly influenced by spontaneous ideas sparked during the production process. I reckon this deviation is the joy of crafting a non-narative animation - being open to changes along the way and creatively weaving all the scenes together.
IV. Experimental footages
In preparation for the final animation, I recorded some experimental footages to deepen my understanding of the stop motion medium. These footages drew inspiration from the earlier concocted random sentences and word combinations.
Beast Weeps Cozy Flesh (out of) Discouragement
Cowardly Slaves Chopped Emerald Claws
V. Behind the scenes
Though this was my first time producing a stop-motion animation, with lots of limitations in equipment, resources, and skills, I’m quite proud of the result. If presented with any future chance to work with this medium again, I will indeed seize it without any hesitance.
